Nandipha Mrwetyana
SAMRO CSI & Special Projects Coordinator
Nandie Mrwetyana is a highly dedicated and accomplished individual in the field of indigenous African music. Her career reflects a strong commitment to promoting, educating, and preserving the rich musical cultures of Africa.
In 2018, SAMRO Foundation employed her to spearhead the Indigenous African Music
(IAM) transcription project. The project focuses on collating, preserving, and promoting indigenous African music that lacks documentation, with the goal of transcribing it into sheet music. The project’s aim was to collate, preserve and promote Indigenous African music that has not been documented so that it can be transcribed into sheet music. She is currently the CSI Coordinator at SAMRO overseeing and administering all CSI (Corporate Social Investment) programmes initiated by the organisation.
Nandie worked as a Music Educator in Soweto for the Gauteng’s Magnet Music programme specialising in teaching African music and vocals.
She held the position of Programme Administrator at the Centre for Indigenous Instrumental Music and Dance Practices of Africa (CIIMDA). Contributed to the organization's efforts in promoting indigenous music and dance practices.
She is a Jazz singer that holds a BMus Honours Degree from UCT. Currently she is pursuing her Masters in Arts & Culture Management at WITS University. She is a lead singer of her own jazz band Mnandi Blue band
Nandie co- founded Ugubhu Nezinsimbi zomculo wesintu, an organisation dedicated to teaching and training young learners how to play Indigenous instruments. Music classes are operated from Morris Isaacson Music School in Soweto. She expanded and started kids’ music lessons in Yeoville, Johannesburg at Sankofie Coffee and Book bar on Sundays. Instrument lessons offered are for various indigenous instruments like Umakhweyana, Uhadi, Mamkhorong, Djembe, Marimba and others.
Nandie Mrwetyana’s multifaceted contributions to the preservation, education, and promotion of indigenous African music showcase her passion for cultural heritage and musical diversity. Her involvement in community initiatives and education programs underscores her commitment to passing on these musical traditions to the next generation.
